Similar to a cucumber, the sponge gourd or loofah grows as a climbing plant mainly in the Southern regions of China. The fruit - which look similar to cucumbers - grow up to 1.50m. When young, they are a prized vegetable. The so-called loofah sponge is made from the fully grown "cucumbers". After removing the pulp and the seeds, only the braid of the leading bundles remains. This can be pressed or sewn into different shapes. The loofah sponge is naturally very resistant to rot and so can be used for a very long time and washed almost indefinitely.
